The purpose of the Forest Management Plan is to provide information and guidance to be used by the Westmore Selectboard for the management of the 294-acre forest owned by the Town of Westmore off Long Pond Road. This plan provides management guidance for a ten-year period beginning in 2026. The plan should be updated in 2036, including the completion of a new forest inventory. The information in this plan combines ecological, economic and social information to help the Westmore Tree Warden and Westmore Selectboard make informed decisions based on long-term management objectives for this land.

Did you know that the town of Westmore has a Town Forest on Long Pond Road? This 294 acre parcel is owned by the Town of Westmore, and is accessed from the town gravel pit off Long Pond Road. The town is currently working with the Orleans County Forester to develop an updated Forest Management Plan, and we would like the community’s input. Please come and join Jared Nunery (Orleans County Forester) and representatives of the town to learn more about this land, and share your thoughts on the management goals and objectives for this land. The meeting will take place at the Westmore Community Church Fellowship Hall (37 Hinton Hill Rd, Westmore) on Tuesday August 19th from 4:30 to 5:30PM to learn more about the inventory of land and the draft Forest Management Plan. The Town of Westmore is seeking public comments on the draft Local Hazard Mitigation Plan. The public comment period will run from July 1 through July 21.

A copy of the draft plan can be found on the Town's website here or a copy can be picked up at the town offices.

Please submit comments to Stephanie Magnan of SEAM Solutions at steph.magnan@seamsolutionsvermont.com . The purpose of the Local Hazard Mitigation Plan is to identify local natural hazards that are a threat to the community, and outline mitigation actions to reduce vulnerability to these hazards. Maintaining an updated Hazard Mitigation Plan is one of the four requirements for Emergency Relief Assistance Fund (ERAF) status and is an eligibility requirement to apply for Hazard Mitigation Grants.

Box-Spring & Mattress Fees

Effective Saturday May 24th, 2025 the price to dispose of box-springs and mattresses at the Town of Westmore Transfer Station will be increased to $50.00 per unit.

Information from Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District: These fees can be avoided by dismantling the mattress and/or the box-spring. Most units consist of an outer layer of cloth and a thin layer of foam attached to a steel or wooden frame. One of these items can generally be dismantled in about 15 minutes, using a claw hammer and a sheet rock knife or similar hand tool. The steel frame can be recycled as scrap metal and the cloth/foam can usually fit in 1 -2 garbage bags. The wood frames are generallyt untreated and can be used for kindling.

How do I license my dog? What are the fees?

Per State and Local Town Ordniance, all dogs need to be registered/licensed by six months of age in the town in which they reside to be legal. The State has increased their portion of the licensing fee by $2.00 to allocate additional funds to the low-cost rabies clinics, low-cost spay neuter clinics, and the continued enforcement of animal welfare issues. Towns collect license fees and send them to the state.

You can obtain a dog license by coming into the office with a VALID RABIES CERTIFICATE and payment. You can now pay on line by credit card or check, but you would need to send us a copy of a VALID RABIES CERTIFICATE before a tag can be issued. We can mail the tag back to you. Please call the office with any questions at 802-525-3007.

Before April 1st an altered male/female would have a total fee of $11.00 ( $4 Town Fee -$4 Neuter Program-$3 Rabies Program)

Before April 1st an un-altered Male/female would have a fee of $15.00 ( $8 Town Fee- $4 Neuter Program-$3 Rabies Program)

After April 1st a late fee of $2.00 is added to the fee of an altered male/female

Please see the attached draft site plan for what was discussed for the Town Beach Improvements.

-Eliminate the current crosswalk at the vehicle entrance. Put one crosswalk on each side (east side, west side) of the current parking areas. This includes curb-cutting the existing curb, removing a few boulders at the new cross walk opening.

-Add a fence to deter pedestrians from crossing anywhere. The fence needs to be 12' off the travel way, which should put them on the north side of the current boulders.

-Add signage along the road notifying vehicles of crosswalk location. I included rapid flashing beacons on each crossing.

-Removable speed bumps or tables at the approach to each crosswalk.

Bags are available at the Town Clerk's office. A town truck will be parked at the Town Clerk's office from 8 AM to 1 PM on Saturday, May 4 to drop off bags. If you miss this time slot, it is okay to leave your bag (tied closed) on the side of the road and the Road Crew will pick it up next week.
